Whether you are a carpenter, electrician, plumber or landscaper, your tools, ute and workmanship are at the heart of your business. A single incident on site, a damaged tool or an allegation of faulty work can quickly turn into a costly claim if you are not properly insured. Having the right mix of cover types in place helps protect both your livelihood and your reputation.

Public liability insurance is a core cover for most tradies. It is designed to respond if a third party alleges that your business activities caused them injury or property damage – for example, a client tripping over your equipment, or accidental damage to a customer's tiles, benchtops or fixtures while you are working. Many commercial contracts, builders and principal contractors will require evidence of public liability cover before you can start on site.

Tools of trade cover is also critical, given how frequently tools are stolen or damaged. Specialist tool insurance can help cover the cost of repairing or replacing your gear if it is stolen in a break‑in, damaged by fire or certain weather events, or accidentally damaged while in use, subject to policy terms and conditions. Standard home or motor policies often do not fully cover work tools, especially when they are stored in vehicles or at job sites, which is why a dedicated solution is important.

Depending on how you operate, you may also need commercial motor cover for your work vehicle, personal accident or income protection to help if you are injured, and contract works cover for larger projects. If you run a company or employ staff, management liability and workers' compensation may also be relevant to protect against employment‑related claims and workplace injuries. A broker can help you map out your risk profile and recommend a combination of covers aligned to your trade, turnover and contract requirements.
